There’s A Boy In The Girls’ Bathroom

Theres a boy in the girls bathroom 2
Sitting in the sun on a bench reading There’s A Boy In The Girls’ Bathroom by Louis Sachar…. my daughter is reading it for school and she told me I should read it. Not sure what I think yet, I have to see how it ends, but I can’t put it down, so that’s a good sign.

Well, I finished There’s A Boy In the Girls’ Bathroom and now I know why my daughter wanted me to read it. It was a heartwarming story. I was a little shocked at first… the main character is horribly behaved. He does awful things to people and no one likes him. In fact, people are awful to him, even the teacher and staff at the school. A school counselor helps Bradley believe in himself and realize he can make better choices. The book shows it’s age with the parents’ attitudes towards counselors and the way the kids bully and fight with each other. I know bullying still happens, but schools actively combat it and it’s less socially acceptable that it was on the late 80s when this book was written. But I think the awful way the kids treat each other makes it all the more emotional when they become friends. You find yourself cheering for the troublemaker as he turns things around. There are bumps along the way and my daughter and I both were moved to tears while reading this book, but it ends happy and the overall lesson is really good. My favorite part, the main character stops believing in monsters, but you’ll have to read the book to find out what that means and why it’s so precious a lesson. ❤️ This is one of those books my daughter wouldn’t have picked up on her own, but she’s glad to have read it and I am grateful it was part of her curriculum at school.
