A Bad Case of Stipes by David Shannon is a super ridiculous, over the top, fun story about being yourself. In this story, a girl named Camilla Cream spends too much time worrying what others think of her and trying to fit in. One day, she wakes up covered in brightly colored stripes! From there, things quickly get worse. No one can figure out what is wrong or how to help her. It isn’t until Camilla learns to be herself that all the craziness finally ends. It’s a fun story with crazy amount of imagination. The vivid artwork pops on every page and is a huge part of the story. It’s an extreme, unrealistic depiction of what would happen if we tried to be what people expected from us. But I think the absurdity of what happens in the story is perfectly paired with idea that we should change ourselves to be more like other people. This is a fun book about being yourself!
