I am always on the lookout for chapter books that will grab the attention of my youngest and get her excited about reading, so I was instantly optimistic when I saw Zoey And Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows. A cute dragon, magic, a mystery, and a young girl; all things that promised a fun book. The story is about a young budding scientist that finds out that there are magical creatures in the world. When a sick dragon needs her help, Zoey uses science to figure out what to do. My daughter loved the fun, fast paced story and looked forward to reading the next chapter. I loved how the author, Asia Citro, creatively wove science into the story. It was both entertaining and educational. And I love when books depict and inspire our young girls’ involvement in STEM. But don’t pass up this book for your young boys either because it’s a book anyone could appreciate. My youngest also really liked the illustrations by Marion Lindsay. It brought a fun visual for my daughter to enjoy while I read to her. Overall, I think this was a really good book for early, more reluctant readers and I am excited to check out the next book in the series to see what Zoey and Sassafras do next.
