Honeysmoke: A Story of Finding Your Color is a beautiful book with a message to match. Written by Monique Fields, Honeysmoke tells the story of a biracial girl that struggles to find her color. She asks her mom, dad, and even her friends, “Am I black or white?” Everyone’s answers are different and no answer seems to fit just right. She finally makes her own color, one that feels right to her. My favorite page is at the end when they encourage people to find their own color while showing names and colors that don’t have to match skin color at all. Your color can be more than words and more than your outward appearance. Who we are isn’t simply defined by one color or what our skin looks like. I love this message. And the sweet illustrations by Yesenia Moises show the beauty in diversity. This was a lovely book with a message that can apply to anyone. What is your color?
